The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has elected archbishop of Lusaka Most Rev. Telesphore George Mpundu as its new president.
According to ZEC secretary general Fr. Cleophas Lungu, Archbishop Mpundu takes over from Archbishop Ignatius Chama of Kasama Archdiocese and Apostolic Administrator of Mpika.
Archibishop Mpundu was elected during ZEC plenary meeting which was held at Kapingila house in Lusaka from July 7, 2014 to July 11, 2014.
Fr. Lungu explained that Archbishop Mpundu is coming at the helm of ZEC board as president for the 3rd time.
He added that ZEC vice president will now be Rt. Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, bishop of Ndola diocese.
Other ZEC portfolios include Rt. Rev. Raymond Mpezele, Bishop of Livingstone Diocese, Rt. Rev. George Cosmas Zumaile Lungu, Bishop of Chipata and Rt. Rev. Charles Kasonde , Bishop of Solwezi.
The alternate member is Most Reverend Ignatius Chama, Archbishop of Kasama and Apostolic Administrator of Mpika Diocese.
Archbishop Mpundu was first elected ZEC President in 1993 when he served for two terms and left office in 1999. He was elected later in 2002 and served as in that capacity until 2008.
