HE John Cardinal Nue |
His Eminence John Cardinal Njue, who is Archbishop of Nairobi, has urged the local Church to move from being too dependent on foreign donations or missionaries but re-invigorate the pastoral vision of AMECEA to build a Church that is self reliant, self ministering and self propagating.
Addressing members of the press at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe upon his arrival in Malawi on 14th July 2014, Cardina Njue, who is also one of the Patrons of AMECEA said that every time they meet as AMECEA Bishops, they are reminded that AMECEA is the mother of the spirit of building the local Church that is truly rooted in the life and aspirations of the People of God.
“We are reminded that yesterday is gone and today is today. Yesterday we used to stretch our hands to be supported by our founders and benefactors, the Missionaries, today we have to learn to stand on our own,” the cardinal said.
Cardinal Njue revealed that there was a letter written by AMECEA reminding and encouraging the local Church to move now towards being a local Church that is self reliant and ministered by her own people, laity, religious and priests.
“As indigenous Christians we are being reminded that we are the Church and we must take the responsibility of the mission of the Church to make sure that the seed that was planted by our dear Missionaries is properly watered and nurtured so that it can bear fruits.”
Cardinal Njue, who is also the Chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that he feels very encouraged whenever they meet as AMECEA Bishops it is an opportunity for them to think together on how to carry on the mission that has been entrusted to them. The Bishops of AMECEA have an enormous task of trying to make sure that they also leave a better legacy to the future generation.
In his concluding remarks, the Cardinal said “I am impressed with the warm welcome that we have been accorded by the people of Malawi and with the presence of the Vice President of Malawi Saulos Chilima here at the Airport. This has given us a great impetus to fully participate at the Plenary Assembly to its successful conclusion.
