UGANDA: Conference Announces Death of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Henry Apaloryamam Ssentongo

The Late Rt. Rev. Apalorymam Ssentongo

The Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) regrets to announce the demise of Rt. Rev. Henry Apaloryamam Ssentongo bishop emeritus of Moroto who passed away on Wednesday December 11 at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.

Disclosing the sad news on behalf of the Chairman of UEC Rt. Rev. Joseph Antony Zziwa and the Bishop of Moroto Rt. Rev. Damiano Giulio Guzzetti, the Secretary General of Uganda Episcopal Conference Msgr. John Kauta stated that the funeral and burial of Bishop Ssentongo will take on Monday December 16 at Bukalasa Minor Seminary in Masaka Diocese.

Bishop Ssentongo was born on November 30 1936 at Villa Maria in Masaka Diocese and was ordained priest on December 21 1963.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Masaka on December 15 1988 followed by his consecration on March 18 1989 at Katovu Cathedral in Masaka.

Rt. Rev. Apaloryaman Ssentongo was appointed the Ordinary of Moroto Diocese on March 30 1992. He retired on February 20 2014 after serving for 22 years as the third Bishop of the Diocese which was created in 1965. He has died at the age of 83.

AMECEA Secretary General Rev Fr. Anthony Makunde on behalf and AMECEA Chairman, Member Episcopal Conferences and Secretariat staff expressed condolences to Uganda Episcopal Conference, the Diocese of Moroto and to the family of the Late Bishop Ssentongo saying,

"While accepting God’s will with humility, we thank Almighty God for the gift of Bishop Ssentongo to the Church and for the selfless service which he rendered to the people of God in the Diocese of Moroto, Uganda."

Fr. Makunde further expressed that as a bishop the late Bishop Ssentongo served his diocese and promoted the spirit of fraternity and solidarity. “His activeness was a blessing in strengthening not only his local conference but also AMECEA. The AMECEA members will always remember him for his generosity.”
