The Medical Superintendent of Pope John Hospital Aber in Lira Diocese Fr. Dr. Samuel Okori has advised the general public to carry out routine physical exercise as a way of preventing kidney failure.
He made the appeal while explaining the medical history of the late Fr. Don Andrew Okeng, the Parish Priest of Uganda Martyrs Parish Minakulu who passed on at Mulago National Referral Hospital Kampala due to kidney failure.
Thousands of mourners gathered at Lira Cathedral Ordinations Ground for the burial ceremony on Friday July 12. Rev. Dr Samuel Okori said kidney disease is a major threat to the population and requires regular exercises to counteract it.
“New findings show that sitting for long hours is a new disease. We are not supposed to sit in a place for more than 30 minutes, when you sit in office, you should actually stand up and walk around for one or two minutes in order to control kidney disease”, he said.
He said excessive consumption of alcohol, diabetes and uncontrolled blood pressure are the immediate causes to kidney failure whose only solution is for the patient to get enrolled on dialysis.
Fr Okori’s professional explanation apparently kept the mourners in deep meditation. He also said those who take pain killer tablets like Aspirin and Panadol on regular basis without getting instructions from qualified medical practitioners risk having kidney failure.
The Medical Superintendent disclosed some of the new developments at Pope John Hospital Aber which include new machines to detect ulcers, heart disease, and prostate cancer. He implored the people to utilize the facility.
