Religious leaders in the country have been asked to improve the economy of their believers and society in general, by sensitizing their people on recognizing opportunities and using the locally available resources as raw materials for producing quality products that meet standards of the international market.

This has been said by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health Social Development, Gender and Children, Dr. John Jingu, during a Workshop held in Dar es Salaam in Protea Courtyard Hotel, which involved religious leaders in the country to discuss the Economy and the Social Market in Tanzania.

He said that the workshop has come at a time when Tanzania is undergoing fast growth of thus he has emphasized that as a community eye, religious leaders have the platform to talk to their believers and the general community through places of worship, their institutions including schools, hospitals and social centers.

He said, using these platforms, religious leaders must advocate for a change in socio-economic status, from dependent economy to ownership economy.

“It is absolutely true that spiritual life insists on obeying God, but for a person to live well in terms of economic prosperity, people must also be vivid,” he said.

Commenting on the two-day workshop, the Secretary General of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), Rev. Dr. Charles Kitima, said that the workshop came after the leaders of TEC, Christian Community Tanzania (CCT) and the Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA) sat down and discussed how to liberate the economy especially by using the market economy System.

He said this system will bring great success because it is aiming at building a Tanzanian, especially the young people who are somewhat disappointed because of high levels of unemployment despite some of them graduating from colleges in various fields. The industrial economy being proposed will provide techniques of using the locally available resources as raw materials for production of goods and ultimately search for markets.

To enable every Tanzanian to be the main beneficiary of the Economy, the religious leaders have launched a special book which, among other things, will enable the citizen to find a variety of ways to produce raw materials and quality products to meet standards for the international market.
