The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) - Commission for Education and Religious Education and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in a bid to deliver value based quality education.

The commission will now benefit from the professional expertise of CUEA in the area of research and training as the institution will have an opportunity to contribute directly to the quality of education within the Church circles and beyond with an aim of building capacity of the Pastoral Agents of Evangelization.

Speaking during the signing of the MoU on 12th, January, 2015 at the KCCB Secretariat, Bishop of Kitale and Member of Commission for Education and Religious Education Rt. Rev Maurice Crowley challenged the MoU parties to ensure that the first fruit of the partnership is a documented proposal on the incorporation of value based curriculum in the 2016 review.

He mentioned with hope that the proposal will support the Bishops Conference in lobbying to the Ministry of Education and the Government in general to embrace values, competencies and needs based curriculum adding that the partnership should also address issues of fee structure in schools, radicalization and faith formation of young people which are becoming a challenge to the Church.

The signing of the MoU gives the parties the liberty to hold consultations, planning meetings, joint research on various topical issues among other activities. The positive impact of the implementation of the MoU will lead to the replication of the same in other Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) countries.

Witnessing the signing of the MoU was the KCCB Chairman Rt. Rev. Philip Anyolo who urged the members to be committed to restoring Catholicism as they offer their services in different capacities.

Speaking at the event, CUEA Vice Chancellor, Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura called for dedication and commitment of all the parties towards implementation of the partnership, voicing out the need to effectively reach out to the people at the grassroots in various dioceses.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by: the KCCB team led by Bishop Maurice Crowley and National Executive Secretary Commission for Education and Religious Education Augusta Muthigani and CUEA team led by Vice Chancellor, Msgr. Dr. Pius Rutechura and Director, Academic Linkages Rev. Prof. Peter Gichure.
