Rt. Rev. Santo Loku Pio Auxiliary Bishop of Juba |
The Auxiliary Bishop of Juba, Rt. Rev. Santo Loku Pio Doggale has described the signing of the peace agreement as a big landmark in the lives of the people of South Sudan.
On Wednesday 26th the president of the Republic of South Sudan H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit signed the Compromise Peace Agreement in Juba to resolve the conflict in South Sudan.
Bishop Santos told AMECEA Online News from Juba that the people on the ground were happy that the peace deal was finally signed and they were hopeful that the signing of the agreement will put to an end the crisis the people South Sudan have been facing since the beginning of the conflict two years ago.
Bishop Santo however said that there are a lot of reservations from many South Sudanese who feel that it would be too soon to celebrate. “There is some fear that the implementations may not go as expected and so the people are saying, well it is true that peace deals is signed but let us wait and see,” he said.
“People are also concerned that previously the peace agreements were signed but later on the implementations failed to happen. These reservations are arising on the fears of the implementation process; and so the people naturally are not celebrating. I think they are happy but you don’t see jubilations,” Bishop Santo explained.
He said that just as the president was signing, some fighting were going on in the unity state outside the command of the president and also outside the command of the rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar.
“The regional bodies especially the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) that has played a major role in ensuring that the peace deal is signed should continue working hand in hand with the government and the people of the Republic of South Sudan to ensure that it is correctly implemented up to the expectations of the long suffering people of this nation,” he said.
