The Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), His Eminence Berhaneyesus D. Cardinal Souraphiel has asked the graduates to choose life instead of nurturing the culture of death which is now growing in our society.

Cardinal Berhaneyesus, who is also the Chairman of AMECEA was speaking during graduations Mass, which was held a day before the graduation day on Friday 29th May 2015 at CUEA, Langata Campus, in Nairobi.

The Cardinal said that the Catholic Church is known worldwide as an institution committed to the defense of human life and standing for promotion of the dignity of human person, which has been the hallmark of its mission.

“Each life is the gift of God and no one has a right to destroy it, whether it is the form of abortion or euthanasia,” he said. He further said, “That is why the Catholic Church is against death penalty; simply because it does not give a chance for someone to be converted.”

Cardinal Berhaneyesus referred to the Garisa University attack which killed 147 people by al shabaab and some of the immigrants who were killed by Extremists and those dying when crossing the Mediterranean to go to Europe. “When we heard the incidences, we were very sad. It does not appeal to our minds that some people take authority over human being’s life in the name of religion,” he said.

He asked the congregation to pray so that such incidences should not happen again. “Let us
emulate Pope Francis who became the voice to the voiceless; who spoke against those who take other people’s lives,” he said.

Meanwhile; a total of 709 students graduated on Friday 29th May 2015, at the CUEA Lang’ata Campus; in a ceremony which was graced by Hon. Prof. Judi Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary, Environment, Water and Natural Resources as a chief guest.

Cardinal Berhaneyesus together with the Chairman of the CUEA University Council, Right Rev. Maurice Muhatia, who is the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru conferred the degrees and diplomas to the graduates.
