AMECEA Secretariat in Collaboration with AMECEA Institutions held a luncheon on 27thMay to honor His Eminence Berhaneyesus Cardinal Souraphiel, and Most Rev. Menghesteab Tesfamariam, Archbishop of Asmara. Cardinal Berhaneyesus is the Chairman of AMECEA and Archbishop of Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
The ceremony which was held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) main Campus in Nairobi was attended by, among other guests, H.E. John Cardinal Njue, Archbishop of Nairobi, Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan H.E. Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo, AMECEA Executive Board members, CUEA Council members, the Most Rev Gabriel Mbilingi, C.S.Sp, the president of SECAM and Metropolitan Archdiocese of Lubango, Angola; Treasurer of SECAM Most Rev. Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle Archbishop of Accra Ghana and members of standing committee of SECAM
“The Success of AMECEA goes beyond telling and I believe that God is behind the success of these achievements of AMECEA. That's why today we want to thank him for yet another milestone of AMECEA,” Most Rev. Luke Thomas Msusa, Archbishop of Blantyre Malawi and Vice Chairman of AMECEA, said during the occasion.
“It was last year during the 18th AMECEA Plenary in Malawi through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that the Plenary Fathers elected the then Archbishop of Addis Ababa Ethiopia to be the Chairman of AMECEA and barely a year later, His Holiness Pope Francis elevated Archbishop Berhaneyesus to the status of the Cardinal. This is a great honor to the AMECEA Region,” Archbishop Msusa said. Adding to this he further said, “Another achievement in AMECEA Region was the appointment of Bishop Mengisteab to be Archbishop of Asmara”.
“We in AMECEA Region are very proud of you and wish all of you the best for your apostolate,” he said. He also thanked the Holy Father Pope Francis for recognizing the AMECEA Region by the appointments.
Speaking at the same function, the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan commended AMECEA Bishops for the solidarity and prayers and asked for more prayers especially to the people of South Sudan who are experiencing turmoil in their country due to conflicts.
