The Catholic Communicators from Uganda held its annual communications week in Fort Portal Diocese, Western Uganda; an event which will be climaxed by the celebration of World Communications Day on Sunday 9th May 2015.
The meeting brought together all diocesan communications Coordinator/Secretaries, directors from all Catholic media houses together with a number of selected journalists from Catholic Media houses across the country.
“Our annual Communications week usually begin with a two-day workshop on selected topics followed by reports from the institutions. Then we have business meeting as communicators followed by a visit to communications institutions within the host diocese; after which we crown the event with the celebration of World Communications Day,” Fr. Philip Odii, the National Communications Secretary explained.
The actual World Communications Day is marked on Sunday before Pentecost which happens to fall on 17th of May this year. However in Uganda it is usually celebrate it in anticipation at the national level, while the actual day is celebrated at the Diocesan level.
“This was a decision by the Ugandan Bishops upon realization that if world communications day celebrations at national level were held on the actual day in one diocese then other Dioceses will not be able to celebrate. The Bishops wanted the communicators to celebrate at the national level earlier, gather enough information on the theme and share the reflections with the respective diocese,” he added.
“I hope you have made arrangements to celebrate in your dioceses the world communications day on 17th of May, we have to honor our day and we have to pray for our apostolate. This is an opportunity for us to seek support, from our people. Communications is one of the apostolate of the Church and it is supposed to support the pastoral work of the Church,” he said.
The Communications Week 2015 was officially inaugurated by Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, Bishop of Port Fortal who is also a member of the Social Communications Commission for Uganda Conference. Also in attendance is the Bishop Chairman of Social for the conference Rt. Rev. Joseph Franzelli, Bishop of Lira as well as Pamela Adinda; representative from AMECEA Social Communications department from Nairobi Kenya.
The Bishop Franzelli clarified that the annual communications week is not a club of communicators but rather an opportunity to carry out the Church’s mandate. “We have come here mandated by the Church to carry out the mission of the Church, which is communicating the Good News.”
