40th Graduation CUEA
Graduands of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) have been advised to practice what they have learnt during their study period, go beyond graduation and be a source of transformation in the society.

Addressing close to 3000 graduands who were following the event that was conducted both online and onsite, the Chairman of the University Council Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba emphasized in his homily that the students after graduation need to fulfil their purpose of being at CUEA to become instruments of change in society.

“As you graduate today, you need to do something more and go beyond graduation to transform the society and that is your contribution,” Bishop Muhatia, the Local Ordinary of Kenya’s Nakuru Diocese told the graduands on Friday, October 29, just before their graduation stressing that they need to make the society a better place.

He underscored that students from CUEA are holistically formed to encounter the world and carry forward the received knowledge to others and not keep it to themselves. Besides, education “prepares students towards wholeness and wellness.”

“You need to see not just physical wellness but also to seek the spiritual wellness that will be helpful to you and those you will encounter, Bishop Muhatia told the graduands reminding them that their joy as human person is “fulfilled when it flows into the glorification of God and share the joy with the intention of transformation.”

“Whatever your purpose, make sure you work towards fulfilling your individual goals. Use CUEA’s core values to do so (that is) prayer, truthfulness, commitment, competence, honesty, excellence and being a witness to life,” the Bishop said and continued, “If embraced by you, these values will make you successful in whatever you aspire to do in life. This is because the world is yearning for honest and just leaders.”

The 40th graduation themed “Education for actualizing life’s purpose and global citizenship,” brought together University Council members, CUEA alumni, Vice Chancellors from other Universities and Principals of Constituent colleges among others.

Warning against falling into the trap of evil in the society Bishop Muhatia said, “The love of money is the root cause of all evil. The attraction of wealth and money can lead you to do everything and anything. You have been formed and educated, beware of these evil and since God has given you the inspiration to understand spiritual matters, do not be led by these attractions as you re-insert yourself to the society.”

He continued, “Do not become part of the statistics of corruption, theft, public wealth of things but take the challenge and be people of integrity and contribute positively in the society today without falling into these evil.”

He then called upon the graduands to say no to corruption, discrimination, nationalism and use the education they have received to “cross social boundaries religious boundaries and embrace human race.”

He further congratulated the graduating students for their perseverance especially during the challenging times of Covid-19 pandemic when they had to adopt to new modes of learning especially via online platform.
