The Social Communications Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) in conjunction with the Catholic Diocese of Dedza recently trained lay Catholic Journalists drawn from all the sixteen parishes of the Diocese in Mass Communication.

According to Dedza Diocese Social Communications Secretary, Fr. Peter White, the training workshop aimed at equipping the lay Catholic journalists with knowledge and skills in mass communication as one way of empowering them in covering Church stories to various Catholic and secular Media Houses in the country.

Among the facilitators of the training workshop was Fr. Andrew Kaufa, the Communication Secretary for ECM and Director of Luntha Television.

The participants were brought through principles of journalism and the skills of writing a good story. Also they were given some training on how they can sniff stories as they happen.

Fr White said the training was crucial for the young people aspiring to become Catholic journalists to be equipped with knowledge on the new media technologies as an alternative way of sharing information hence promotes Church stories within the Diocese.

Fr White challenged the young Catholic journalists to embrace the use of new media technologies as they can easily make the Gospel message reach out to many people within or outside the Catholic Church.

During his presentation Fr. Kaufa challenged the participants to be proactive and spread the Gospel by sending Church stories with Catholic Media Houses. “Make use of what you have learnt here and obviously we expect a change when you go back to your respective parishes. We need to hear a lot from you through stories,” he said.
