In his paper presentation to the delegates of AMECEA Plenary Assembly Bishop Charles Kasonde of Solwezi Diocese in Zambia said that priesthood plays a vital role in formation hence the need to give adequate training to future priests and other pastoral agents.
“The Church on earth is by its very nature missionary in the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of souls. While all the members of the Church are participants in this mission the role of priests is pivotal,” he added.
He said that it is for this reason that since the 16th Century, during the council of Trent, the formal training of priests in the seminary is compulsory. “Houses of formation are the primary entry point for deposit of faith and on-going formation,” he said adding that “It is through seminaries that the process of formation, information and transformation of witnesses of the gospel begins.”
