The Pontifical Missions Societies (PMS) in Malawi have appealed for financial support from parents and well-wishers, to help in their Covid-19 response programmes.

In an interview, the PMS National Director Father Vincent Mwakhwawa said since the onset of the pandemic, all their programs were suspended as a measure to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, hence the need to improvise other means of reaching out to children with Church teachings through radio programmes.

"Like any other arm of the church, the PMS is greatly affected. However, we are trying to respond to the Covid-19, especially on missionary formation of children. We have tried to respond by piloting classes for children on Radio Maria Malawi for a month, every Saturday of April. The pilot has been good and children are following and listening; both the parents and priest are happy," he said.

"We piloted through little money from from a well wisher but we don't have the budget and funds to run this initiative, hence appealing for financial support from parents and other well wishers that will see the initiative smoothly running and probably being aired on other radios. We were doing it in Chichewa (a local language) but other parents requested to do in Tumbuka and English as well," he added.

Commenting on the development, animator from the Archdiocese of Blantyre Mrs Helen Maseko said as a way of ensuring that all kids are provided with Church teachings through radio programmes, all people need to join hands in making the initiative a reality.

She then encouraged everyone to be part of the fundraising activity in one way or another by sponsoring radio programmes which will help many children especially during this tough time when the world has been affected with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently in Malawi, Church gatherings remain suspended to contain further spread of Coronavirus which has registered 43 positives cases, 3 deaths and 14 recoveries.
