The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) is appealing to all Christians, partners and people of goodwill to support the currently launched emergency response initiatives in support of the needy affected by the Coronavirus pandemic in Kenya.
In a letter sent this week and signed by KCCB Chairman the Archbishop of Kisumu Most Rev. Philip Anyolo, together with Caritas Kenya President and Archbishop of Mombasa Most Rev. Martin Kivuva, there is an urgent need for food and financial support to people adversely affected in various dioceses.
“We request you to support this initiative by donating funds, food and non-food items to support and save the lives of the affected population. In-kind donations (dry food and non-food items) can be channeled through parishes, Diocesan and National offices and other church institutions. All the contributions will be collected at the designated places for distribution to the most affected people,” the Archbishops said.
They said, the emergency operation will provide core relief such as basic food stuff, public health messaging on the importance of hand-washing and sanitizing and safety precautions announced by Government. In addition to that, health facilities that are providing case management of Covid-19 patients will also be provide with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Speaking during launch of the initiative at Holy Family Basilica during Mass on 26th, April, 2020, the Archbishop Kivuva called for transparency and accountability in utilization and disbursements of the donated funds and items meant for assisting the needy.
“It is a high time to save lives and share with the needy and not a time to enrich oneself. I know it is not easy for everyone, but I am sure that some of you have something to share, do not hide it away for self but let us share like the disciples we are,” he said.
As of 29th, April, 2020, Kenya reported 384 Coronavirus Cases, 14 deaths and 129 people who have recovered. The disease has been detected in twelve counties including Kilifi, Mandera, Kajiado, Nakuru, Kitui, Siaya, Homabay, Kakamega, Kwale and Uasin Gishu but the mostly affected being Nairobi and Mombasa.
The emergency response initiative will be coordinated by Catholic Health Commission of Kenya (CHCK), Caritas Kenya and Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC).
