Catholic Media houses under Kenya Episcopal Conference (KCCB) have embarked on broadcasting live Holy Masses in substitute for regular Eucharistic Celebrations offered in cathedrals, parishes and chapels.
This initiative to keep giving spiritual nourishment to the more than 11 million Kenyan faithful who are no longer able to congregate at their various places of worship, has been necessitated by Government’s suspension of all church, mosque, and other religious gatherings in a bid to arrest the spread of COVID- 19.
The directive was issued on 22nd, March 2020 by the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe who said there was non-compliance of religious institutions to the social distance requirement issued on 20th, March 2020, after the number of people confirmed to have Coronavirus in the country increased from three to seven.
Kagwe said the instruction also included weddings, funerals and other social gatherings which are restricted to immediate family members only.
“These directives take effect immediately until further notice. Once again, we are aware that these measures may be inconvenient at the moment, but I assure you that they are necessary for meeting our indicated objective of keeping all Kenyans safe,” he said.
Following this development, KCCB’s Radio Waumini on 88.3 FM is live-streaming Eucharistic celebration from Monday to Friday at 8:15 which is repeated at 15:00; on Saturday Mass is broadcast in the evening at 18:00 while on Sunday the is radio broadcasts live at 06:00, 11:00 and 18:00. Also Radio Maria in the Archdioceses of Nairobi (99.3 FM) and Nyeri (90.0 FM) has scheduled live-streaming of Mass everyday at 12:00 and 07:00 respectively.
Capuchin Television’s director in Nairobi, Fr. Peter Waweru, announced that the station will air recorded daily Mass at 13.30 and 20.30 daily while in the Archdiocese of Mombasa’s Radio Tumaini (93.0 FM) will broadcast Mass at 06:30 everyday.
According to the schedules shared by the Diocese with the national office, Radios Amani and Umoja in the Diocese of Nakuru will broadcast live daily Mass at 06:45, 13:00, 15:30, 18:30 and 20:00 while the Diocese of Eldoret Radio Upendo (89.4 FM) will do the same during the week at 06:30; 12:30 and 18:00 and on Sunday at 06:30, 10:00, 12:30 and 18:00.
The same development is reported about priests celebrating Mass in the studios of the Catholic radios and broadcasting live in the other dioceses including Janguani FM in Marsabit, Akicha FM in Lodwar, Shahidi FM in Isiolo, Radio Maria in Murangá, Osotwa FM in Ngong' and Mitume FM in Kitale.
