Christian educators under the umbrella body of Association of Christian educators in Malawi (ACEM) recently came together to revive the association and map the way forward on how they are to continue working together and improve teaching and learning in Christian schools in the country.

ACEM which comprises three religious mother bodies namely Episcopal Conference of Malawi, Malawi Council of Churches and Evangelical Association of Malawi, exists to develop, establish and promote a quality and holistic educational system that adequately caters for the whole person as created in God’s image.

It is against this background that having realized that the Association has been inactive for the past few years, the mother bodies felt a great need to make ACEM fully operational again. This is to promote the mother bodies learning from each other on Christian values and beliefs about teaching and learning, to bring about change as a lobby group in the education system.

Speaking during the association’s conference at Sunbird hotel in Lilongwe on the 10thof December, 2019, the outgoing ACEM Chairman, His Grace Thomas Luke Msusa said the Church is mandated to take care of its people by educating them. ACEM therefore compliments Government’s efforts in educating a Malawian child.

“Today is a very important day as we revive the work of ACEM so that together we implement education policies in the country. ACEM supports the agenda of government in education. We believe as Christians, mandated by Jesus Christ to go and teach, we are supposed to be united as different Churches with one vision of teaching Malawian children so that they become good citizens of Malawi,” said Archbishop Msusa.

During the conference, the mother bodies also discussed the issue of dress code in Christian schools.  They said there is one policy that guides them and it makes it clear that students should have one uniform that makes them look like one family regardless of where they come from. They agreed to the fact that the Government of Malawi and the Ministry of Education know the policy and that is what will be followed in all Christian schools no matter what.

On his part, member of the newly elected body of ACEM trustees, Rev Masauko Lyson Mbolembole said as people who have just been elected into ACEM Secretariat, they will make sure to continue from where the association stopped and improve on the challenged that were faced in the past.

The mother bodies pledged full support and partnership to ACEM Secretariat financially and technically to make sure the secretariat is fully operational in sharing issues from Christian educators to government and other concerned stakeholders and also to make sure that Christian schools continue being even more successful in the country.
