SOUTH SUDAN: Pope Prays for Peace in South Sudan

The Holy Father Pope Francis has called for an end to the atrocities and humanitarian difficulties facing the people of South Sudan while also calling the political leaders to resolve their differences through dialogue for the good of the people.

According to Catholic Radio Network (CRN) this was the message that was delivered by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan His Excellency Charles Daniel Balvo in Juba during his first official visit to the country.

The Apostolic Nuncio arrived in Juba (South Sudan) on Monday 20, 2014 and was warmly received by the Archbishop of Juba Most Rev Paolino Lukudu, other Bishops of South Sudan and Sudan and a number of Christians at Juba International Airport.

The visit of the Apostolic Nuncio coincided with the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC)’s extraordinary plenary that started on Tuesday 21, 2014 in Juba and expected to conclude on January 30. 

At an extraordinary plenary meeting the Apostolic Nuncio called on the Church leaders to be witnesses to the Good News even in the most difficult situations. He expressed his commitment to work with the Bishops of South Sudan for the good of the Church.

Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo was appointed by the Holy Father to be Nuncio to South Sudan on Dec. 21, 2013.

Meanwhile, the President of SCBC H.E. Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako made an appeal to political leaders in South Sudan to go beyond their personal interest to solve the crisis the Country is experiencing.

Cardinal Wako who is also the Archbishop of Khartoum, Sudan, urged the South Sudanese to realize that they are all sons of God, and must not kill each other. The Cardinal also called on the Bishops to focus on serious matters during this meeting for which the people are expecting a lot from them.
