Speaking with AMECEA Online News, the Coordinator of the Capacity Building Project at the AMECEA Secretariat Ms. Christine Mbugi said the decision was arrived at after consultations with the Sudan Catholic Bishop’s Conference (SCBC) Secretary General Rev. Fr. Jacob Odwa.

“South Sudan was going through a difficult period and this was not the right time to conduct the training” said the SCBC Secretary General adding that “The tension is high in the country but efforts are been done from the political, civil society and church sphere to restore peace and attend to humanitarian crisis.”

According to Ms Mbugi AMECEA was in agreement with the postponement for that in such a situation, the participants who were supposed to be drawn from both Sudan and South Sudan may not be psychologically ready for the leadership training until the situation on the ground is safe and calm. “We continue to pray that peace and calm is quickly restored in South Sudan,” she said.

She said AMECEA is just waiting to be advised by the SCBC for the proper date when the training can take place.

Meanwhile, information from South Sudan said the SCBC will be having their Extraordinary Plenary Assembly between 21st– 31st January, 2014 in which the Secretary General of AMECEA Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo has been invited to participate.

The Capacity Building Project during an annual evaluation meeting last year planned to carry out three trainings in 2014 targeting mainly the agents of evangelization across the AMECEA Region in order to empower them in their pastoral duties.
