MALAWI: Zomba Diocese Urges Physically Challenged Students to Study Hard

Luke Bisani

Physically challenged students in the Diocese of Zomba have been encouraged to work diligently in their studies to achieve independence.

During the celebration of the Jubilee Year for People With Disabilities at the new Mpalankhanga Secondary School for the Deaf, the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Alfred Chaima, emphasized the importance of dedicating time to education.

"Be focused and put effort in class. Compete with your fellow learners elsewhere and prove to the world that you are intelligent, gifted and able just, like anyone else," said Bishop Chaima.

Bishop Chaima urged the students to look towards the future with hope and to approach it with confidence in all their endeavors.

"Always remember: the doors of higher education are open to everyone; you must find your way into the university," he added.

Bishop Chaima also appealed to various stakeholders, including government to demonstrate interest in the education of individuals with disabilities and to provide adequate support, ensuring they have the opportunity to prepare for a better life.

For instance, he highlighted the lack of basic necessities at the institution such as water, fencing, dining halls, and learning materials as urgent challenges that require the attention of people willing to help.

Mpalankhanga Secondary School, located in Zomba district, has an enrollment of 80 students with disabilities, under the care of the Sisters of Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM).
