The Archbishop of Mombasa Most Rev Martin Kivuva on 29th December 2015 received the Pallium which was presented to him by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, Most Rev Daniel Balvo at Holy Ghost Cathedral, Mombasa.
The celebration of receiving the pallium was also attended by H.E. John Cardinal Njue, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Nairobi, Most Rev. Peter Kairo of Njeri, Rt. Rev. Joseph Alessandro of Garisa, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Barbara of Malindi and other national and county government dignitaries.
The event comes after his appointment by Pope Francis on 9th December, 2014 to be the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa, replacing the late Archbishop Boniface Lele.
Pallium is a liturgical vestment worn over the chasuble. It is
bestowed by the Pope on Archbishops having metropolitan jurisdiction as a symbol of their participation in papal authority. It is made of a circular strip of white lamb's wool about two inches wide and is placed over the shoulders. Two vertical bands, extending from the circular strip in the front and back, give the pallium a Y-shaped appearance. Six crosses, one each on the chest and back and on each shoulder and band, adorn the vestment.Pope Francis decided that each newly-appointed metropolitan Archbishop should be formally vested at a ceremony held in his own archdiocese, by the Apostolic Nuncio, replacing the tradition of the Roman Pontiff presenting the Pallium on the Feast of St Peter and St Paul in Rome, thus greatly favoring the participation of the local Church.
