The Vice President Mr. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi called on all stake holders to commit themselves to the national agenda for Reconciliation as rolled out by the Uganda Episcopal Conference.

The Vice President made this call during the meeting of African Forum for Catholic Social Teachings (AFCAST)that was held in Kampala Uganda from 2nd– 4th December 2013 that was also attended by AMECEA Secretary General Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo.

Others who attended the meeting include Minister of States for Teso Affairs Hon. Amongin Aporu Christine as well as the Minister for Bunyore Kingdom; Catechists from all dioceses in the country, Justice and Peace Coordinators from across the country and parish leaders from some parishes within the Archdiocese of Kampala.

The meeting which took place at Graceland and Gardens Gabba Kampala under the Theme of Reconciliation in the Light of AfricaeMunus, focused on Uganda and how much the country is traumatized and wounded by historical and present issues which are quite pressing such as division along kingdoms and lack of the spirit of nationalism; long history of military rule and operation, which has made the country politics militarized and divisions based on religious affiliations namely the Muslims, the Anglicans and the Catholics.

After the meeting, delegates proceeded on a pilgrimage to Namugongo Shrine for closing Mass, which was presided over by Archbishop of Kampala Most Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

The AFCAST meeting in Uganda was a subsequent of a meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 27 to 30 May 2013 in which delegates focused on two themes: the state of Catholic social teaching in Africa today and the contested role of the religious in public life in Africa.

The next meeting will be held Accra Ghana in August 2014.
