Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe,
Bishop of Kakamega

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe, has challenged Consecrated Women to be awake in order to awake the world. Speaking to over 150 Religious Women of the Sisters of Mary of Kakamega, during a two-day seminar on 3rd and 4th July 2015, that was specifically organized for the Sisters of Mary who have celebrated their silver jubilees and above, the bishop alerted the sisters that this year of Consecrated Life expects them to be awake so that they, as the Holy Father has implored, “look at the past with gratitude, the present with passion and the future with hope.”

Bishop Obanyi encouraged the sisters to reawaken their faith and religious commitment in the midst of the myriad challenges of the contemporary times so that the world conforms to Christ. He made specific reference to contemporary challenges facing religious life; as well as the institute of Marriage and Family Life. He called on the sisters to intensify their prayers and commitment to the service of the Lord for these and other needs of the Church. The Bishop, who is also Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (KCCB) Bishop Chairman for Social Communication, cautioned the sisters to be alert to the threats to religious and Christian life being brought about by the modern means of communication and technological advancements.

The seminar took place at the Sisters of Mary of Kakamega Mother House in Mukumu and brought together post jubilarians from the vast Dioceses in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and the America, where the Sisters of Mary are currently serving in a variety of apostolates.  The Bishop advised the sisters that the best way of evangelization is life witness. “As Sisters of Mary of Kakamega, strive to bring to the Church of God the children, youth, as well as the old by your way of life.”

While blessing the sisters and sending them back to their respective communities of service, the bishop Said, “Bring the joy of Christ to all the people you meet.”
