ZAMBIA: Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital to become a Referral Hospital Offering Specialised Health Services

The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) says through Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital in Lusaka, the Catholic Church will continue to reach out to the poor and vulnerable in society, especially those that are sick and need the healing of body, mind and soul.

Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu said this in a speech read for him by Zambia Episcopal Conference Secretary General, Very Rev Fr Cleophas Lungu during the Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital Open Day.

Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital is named after His Eminence Adam Cardinal Koslowieski, who was ordained Bishop of Lusaka Diocese in 1955 and as Archbishop in 1959. He was the first Cardinal in Zambia and the first Chairman of AMECEA.

Archbishop Mpundu said that the Catholic Church is working closely with the ministry of Health in championing a healthy nation and providing the cost effective and quality health services as close to the family as possible.

He announced that the ultimate goal of Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital is to become a referral hospital that offers specialised health services.

He added that already, apart from general health services, the hospital is also offering services in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Urology, Nephrology and Oncology.

Speaking at the same event, the Lusaka Central constituency MP, Hon. Guy Scott, said that the area where Cardinal Adam Memorial Hospital is located in his area of jurisdiction. He thanked the Catholic Church for greatly complementing government effort in health saying the Church has a unique and highly respected place in Zambia’s health care system. 60% of health service provision in the rural areas of Zambia is by the Church.
