“The Church is well positioned to reach the people at a grass root level and encourage the bonds of brotherhood and friendship among both people”. He said during the mission aimed at clearing concerns regarding the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
Fr. Hagos added the Catholic Church in the two countries has undertaken to help clear any misunderstandings regarding the GERD so that the people can benefit after the dam is completed.
As the two countries are found in the AMECEA region leaders of the Catholic Church in both countries can discuss the public’s concerns and propose solutions.” He added that this is an advantage in the effort to bring the people of the two neighbouring countries closer as the Church is always for the benefit of the people.
According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs the delegation delivered Ethiopia’s intention for an equitable and reasonable utilization of Nile waters. They expressed their eagerness to cooperate with Ethiopia in the successful completion of the construction of the GERD recognizing the mutual benefit for the people of Sudan and Ethiopia.
In March, the leaders of Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia signed an initial cooperation deal on sharing the Nile River and the construction of the GERD. The GERD, extending on an area of 1,800 square kilometers, is scheduled to be completed in three years at a cost of 4.7 billion U.S. dollars.
