The Holy Father Pope Francis on 1st November, 2013, accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Mombasa, Kenya, presented by Archbishop Boniface Lele in accordance with Canon Law Can. 401 paragraph two.
Meanwhile the Holy Father has appointed Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Barbara, OFM Cap. Bishop of Malindi as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Mombasa.
Archbishop Lele was born on 14th April 1947 in Kitui Diocese and ordained a priest on 8th December, 1974. He was appointed Bishop of Kitui on 2ndNovember, 1995 and later on ordained a Bishop of the same diocese on 2ndFebruary 1996. He was appointed Archbishop of Mombasa on 1st April 2005.
