The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) through its Relief and Development arm, Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) recently distributed food and none food items to flood victims in Ntcheu, Dedza diocese.
Some of the relief items distributed on that day included Cooking Oil, Maize, Pulses and clothes to 600 households in the area. The exercise will continue for some days.
According to Dedza Diocesan Secretary for CADECOM, Patrick Namakhoma the donation is part of the K 1 Billion (equivalent to USD 2.3 Million) National Relief Food Campaign of the Catholic Bishops in Malawi launched in January, 2015.
“This donation is a symbol that the Catholic Church in Malawi has been touched with what the problem that made thousands of people displaced, homeless, and stay without food as floods also destroyed crops and properties,” he said.
Fr. Henry Chinkanda who represented the acting Secretary General of ECM said that the victims should appreciate what the church has done to them by not selling the items but rather use them accordingly.
District Commissioner for Ntcheu, Harry Phiri, commended CADECOM for remembering Ntcheu with the relief items. He said that the government was contented that many organizations have been responded to its call of relief.
Phiri urged the Catholic Church through CADECOM to continue helping people in giving such kind of support which is the only way of complementing government's effort in taking care of its citizenry.
