Narok County in Kenya is the first county in Kenya to be hit by floods in the recent rains that the country is experiencing.

According to media reports, Narok county which is close to Maasai Mara National Park  has severely hit by floods that claimed nine lives so far. "Five are being treated in hospitals and another nine people are unaccounted for," media reported.

On Wednesday, the County’s security committee said the toll was likely to rise. Several people are feared trapped in a building which collapsed on Tuesday night. The floods are a result of heavy raining which are going on in the country which led to banks of the river to burst sweeping through the town and its surroundings. More than 10 vehicles were swept into the river.

Reports from Narok stated that there were some bodies which were found more than five kilometres downstream while others were stuck on the guard rails of a bridge on the Narok-Bomet road.

Rescue and recovery efforts were led by Kenya Red Cross, National Youth Service and the National Disaster Preparedness teams led the search and rescue efforts. Two police helicopters were deployed for rescue mission.

In Kisumu County, at least 300 families are spending nights in the cold while others have fled their homes following heavy rains on Sunday night. The downpour destroyed many houses. There are also fears of cholera and pneumonia outbreaks.
