The Bishop Chairman of Liturgy for the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) Rt. Rev Salutaris Libena has said that the new Swahili version of the New Roman Missal will be ready before the end of the year following the progress made by the translation team at Kurasini, Dar es Salaam this week.

According to Bishop Libena, the translation team is comprised by 10 members from TEC and two from Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) who gathered for two weeks in Kurasini, Dar es Salaam for that noble task.

He said the initiative is the realization of the 18th AMECEA Plenary Assembly resolution which wanted that the two conferences (Tanzania and Kenya) to come together and do a common translation.

"It is a delicate job that requires precision in language, right thinking and interpretation, while taking into consideration the historical perspective of the Church, her teaching and that of the Bible without losing the real meaning of the original version which is in Latin,” he said.

Bishop Libena who is the ordinary of the Diocese of Ifakara said that the translation of Mass in respect to the liturgical calendar is ready. “Now we are working for some other section of the Missal,” he said.

“The Missal with the readings will only come after the alter missal is ready,” he said adding that “The Swahili version of the Roman Missal will be used in all countries that speak the language.”

He said that when the draft is ready it will be sent to the Bishops of Tanzania and Kenya for correction and approval before it is submitted to the Congregation of Divine Worship and the discipline of the Sacraments in Vatican for final approval of Publication.
