Vice Chairman of AMECEA Most Rev. Thomas Msusa, Archbishop of Blantyre, Malawi and the Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Msgr. Pius Rutechura will represent AMECEA in the Thanksgiving Mass in honor of the New Cardinal His Eminence Bernayesus D. Souraphiel, on 22 February 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Information received from Rev Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo, Secretary General AMECEA said that the Vice Chairman will represent Bishops of AMECEA while Msgr. Pius Rutechura will represent the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
Speaking to AMECEA Online News Msgr. Rutechura said that as the new cardinal is being elevated; all the institutions of AMECEA and all the people from the region are part and parcel of that elevation. “We really feel highly honored by the Holy Father and the Universal Church to elevate our chairman, our Chancellor to this high honor within the Church,” he said adding that “Elevation of AMECEA Chairman to Cardinal Status also raises the image of the regional conference-AMECEA.”
Msgr. Rutechura is confident that H.E. Berhaneyesus Cardinal D. Souraphiel who by the virtue of being AMECEA Chairman is also the Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, will be able to execute all his responsibilities well including any other duties the Holy Father Pope Francis will delegate him at the Vatican.

“Being one of the young Cardinals appointed, it is no doubt that the Holy Father will delegate some more responsibilities to our new Cardinal at the Vatican, which will require him to go there from time to time but I am very sure that he will manage it perfectly well,” he said.
Msgr. Rutechura also explained that the advanced communication and information technology makes everything easy; one only needs to master the art and everything will run smoothly. “The New Cardinal Berhaneyesus is very efficient when it comes to communication, he is a good communicator and very good at the internet, this will help him a lot in executing his responsibilities,” Msgr. Pius said.
Cardinal Berhaneyesus is among the 20 Cardinals inducted by Pope Francis during the Saturday 14th Consistory Ceremony.
