Secretary General Eritrean Bishops

The Secretary General for Eritrean Bishops Abba Tesgaghiorghis Kiflom has said that the Elevation of the Diocese of Asmara to the Metropolitan Status is an honor to the Catholic Church in the country and also a big challenge owing to the fact that a lot has to be done in terms of organizing the structures to suit an independent conference.

Speaking to AMECEA Online News in Nairobi where he is attending the meeting of Secretaries General from AMECEA member conferences, Abba Kiflom said, “As an independent conference, we have to measure up to the expectations of a metropolitan Church, which may not be easy in our situation.”

“We are celebrating the result of many years of hard work. For the Last ten years or so, the Catholic Church in Eritrea has been asking the Congregations for the Oriental Rites for a metropolitan Church because of the difficulties that were there in making decisions at local level since independence of Eritrea,” he explained.

Abba Kiflom said that a lot has to be done in terms of organization. The whole structure has to be organized in an effective way. He is however positive that everything will go on well.

“The Catholic Church in Eritrea has a good name; it is reputed for offering essential services to the vulnerable especially during the struggle for independence to an extent that at some point the Ethiopian government accused it of giving aid to the rebels,” he explained.
