The Catholic Bishops of Sudan and South Sudan have recommended the Ongoing Formation Program for Priests that aim at enhancing evangelization in their countries, during their annual plenary assembly, which was held in Juba from 5th - 14th November, 2014.
Speaking to AMECEA OnlineNews from Juba, Secretary General to the Bishops Conference, Fr Jacob Odwa Paul said that the ongoing formation for priest was one of the major agenda during the plenary.
“The Bishops resolved that the ongoing formation program for priest after ordination is mandatory in order to equip them with various skills and knowledge to handle various challenges that many priests face in their apostolate as agents of evangelization,” Fr Odwa explained.
The Bishops have asked the dioceses to consolidate resources in order to facilitate the program. “Priests need to be oriented, well informed, intelligent and capable of handling various situations that may arise while performing their duties. This can only be achieved when they upgrade their capacity from time to time," he said adding that "The conference is open to work with collaborators and people of good will to ensure that this is happening."
Another important agenda that was discussed during the plenary meeting was the naming of the Conference to accommodate the two countries.
“The process of changing the name of the conference is usually done in a very systematic way; first the Bishops have to deliberate on the matter and work on the amendments of the statutes to be able to accommodate the new name,” Fr Odwa explained adding that "The committee for the amendments of the statutes was formed and it is headed by Rt. Rev. Michael Didi, Bishop of El Obeid, in Sudan.
Fr Odwa said that the Bishops managed to come up with a new name which is in the process of being sent to Rome for approval before it is adopted by the conference.
