ETHIOPIA: Kenya - Ethiopia Highway to Be Ready Next Year

The tarmacking of the main road linking Kenya with Ethiopia is expected to be completed by the end of next year, according to the Governor of Kenya's Marsabit County. Governor Ukur Yattani said the 505-kilometre Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale road was now 60% complete and that work was continuing well.

He said "Construction is ongoing, and by the end of next year, we will have connected Addis Ababa to Nairobi by a tarmac road. This, he added, will change the economy of this area. The road is expected to have cost over US$500 million when finished and is being funded by the African Development Bank, the European Union and the Kenya Government.

The Governor said the road would ease travel to Nairobi and will also mean the establishment of petrol stations, tourist lodges, banks and other institutions. The road, said Governor Yattani, will be "a game changer."
