AMECEA is mourning the death of Archbishop Emeritus of Kasama Most Rev. James Mwewa Spaita, 80, who passed on Tuesday 4th November, 2014 at Kasama General Hospital in Northern Province.
A condolence message sent to the President of the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) by the AMECEA Secretary General Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, on behalf of the Chairman of AMECEA Most Rev Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, CM, Archbishop of Addis Ababa Ethiopia, said AMECEA Secretariat has received with deep sorrow the sad news of the passing on of Most Rev James Spaita, Archbishop Emeritus of Kasama.
“ArchbishopSpaita will be remembered for his selfless service which he rendered to the people of God in Zambia and AMECEA region,” read the message adding that “May his Soul rest in Peace.”
Information received from the Archbishop of Kasama, Most Rev. Ignatius Chama said that the late Archbishop Spaita had a stroke on 2nd November 2014 at the same hospital where he remained in coma until Tuesday morning when he seemed to regain consciousness. “On Tuesday morning, he seemed to have come out of coma, he spoke to a few people and even asked for water, but then later in the day he slipped again into coma and was pronounced dead at 1540 hours,” Archbishop Chama explained.
According to Archbishop Chama, the late prelate has been battling diabetes which resulted to him losing his eyesight two years ago.
The late Archbishop was buried this Friday, November 7th, 2014 at the St. John Cathedral Kasama.
The Late Archbishop was born on 8th April, 1934 in Bombwe. He was ordained priest in Mansa Diocese on 9th September, 1962; and was later appointed Bishop for Mansa diocese on 28th February 1974 and ordained Bishop of Mansa on 28th April the same year.
On 3rdDecember, 1990 he was appointed Archbishop of Kasama and retired on 30thApril 2009 upon reaching the age limit.
