SOUTH SUDAN: Bishop Paride Consecrates a Multipurpose Centre

The Emeritus Bishop of Torit Rt Rev Paride Taban, on Saturday 11 October 2014 consecrated a multipurpose centre marking his Golden jubilee at his home area, Opari.

Bishop Taban said that the structure, known as Holy Rosary Church Multi-purpose Centre is a school, training and prayer centre for the community, Emmanuel Radio reported.

During the celebration Bishop Taban baptized 18 infants. He said that the Sacrament means giving birth to new community in the Church.

Torit Apostolic Administrator Monsignor Thomas Oliha congratulated Bishop Paride Taban on occasion of 50 years as a priest serving in the vineyard of the Lord.

The Apostolic Administrator urged all the faithful to emulate the long term service of Bishop Taban.

Emeritus Bishop Paride Taban Kenyi was ordained a priest in 1964 and when missionaries were expelled from South Sudan, he was among few priests left and spent the two decades war in the country.

He was first appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Juba as well as Titular Bishop of Tadamata on 28th January 1980. He was Titula ordained Bishop of Tadamata on 4th May 1980. He was appointed Bishop of Torit on 2nd July 1983 and Resigned as Bishop of Torit on 7th February 2004.

He co-founded o the New Sudan Council of Churches, which acted as a facilitator in peace negotiations during the Second Sudanese Civil War. Since his retirement he has been leading an effort to make peace in Sudan/South Sudan real by setting up the Kuron Peace Village, established in 2005. In 2013, he won the 2013 Sergio Vieira de Mello Prize for his work at the Holy Trinity Peace Village in Kuron.
