The AMECEA Chairman Most Rev. Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel has called on the Catholic Church leaders to continue being the moral voice and conscience of the people in the region.

Archbishop Berhaneyesus who is also the Metropolitan Archbishop of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia said this during his opening remarks at the first AMECEA Executive Board meeting since the 18th Plenary Assembly held at AMECEA Secretariat on Thursday and Friday 25th-26th September.

The Archbishop said that, “Today people are looking up for leadership from the church. This is a big task and challenge to us.” He invoked the intercession of Our Lady of Africa, Saints and Martyrs from the AMECEA Region to intercede for the delegates as they embark on great responsibility for the region.

The Chairman also asked the delegates to take that time to pray for the clergy, religious and laity from the region who support them, as collaborators in realizing the vision and mission of AMECEA.

He asked them to remember the countries which are experiencing difficulties such as South Sudan. “Let us not make them feel isolated as they go through these difficult moments,” he said.

Archbishop Berhaneyesus expressed gratitude to the former chairman of AMECEA His Grace Tarcisio G. Ziyaye, together with the former Executive Board members for their diligence and commitment to serve the association, which led to the achievement of great things. In addition to that, he expressed great appreciation to the Bishops of AMECEA for entrusting them with that great responsibility of leading the organization for the next four years.
