The 18thAMECEA Plenary Assembly came to a close on 26th July, 2014 by the celebration of Holy Mass led by the New AMECEA Chairman His Grace Berhaneyesus D. Souraphiel, at Maula grounds of Our Lady of Africa Cathedral.
Those who concelebrated during the closing Mass included His Eminence Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako, His Eminence John Cardinal Njue, Most Rev. Tarcisio Ziyaye , former Chairman of AMECEA, Archbishops, Bishops and priests from the region and beyond.
Also in attendance at the closing Eucharistic Celebration was Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, Right Honorable Saulos Chilima, the Governor of the city of Lilongwe and a number of government dignitaries.
The Holy Mass which also attracted a hundreds of Catholics from all over Malawi started around
9.00 am with the procession to the Maula Cathedral ground. Different groups of Catholic faithful, dressed in the Chitenge cloth with the 18thAMECEA Plenary Assembly Emblem flocked from the various Parishes of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe and other dioceses filled the area that was designated for worship. Throughout the celebration the Catholic faithful participated actively in singing and dancing led by the choir. The new Chairman, Most Rev. Berhaneyesus, presented an official Communique’, which is the official message of the AMECEA Bishop at the end of the 18th Plenary Assembly to the Family of God and people of good will in and beyond the AMECEA region. He thanked the bishops, government and people of Malawi for being generous to the delegates. Speaking in Chichewa language, the New Chairman said to the Congregation “Zikomo kwa Mbili, Mulungu Akudaliseni”which means Thank You very Much, May God Bless You all.”
To express the sense of communion and solidarity as the Church in AMECEA region, the Choir ended the celebration of Mass with a hymn, “Akalotolika ndi amozi si alekana”, which means the “Catholics are One and nothing shall separate them”.
