Archbishop Stephen Ameyu Martin of South Sudan's Juba Archdiocese |
Archbishop Stephen Ameyu Martin of the Archdiocese of Juba has disclosed the formation of an ecumenical COVID-19 taskforce committee mandated to carry out awareness in all parishes.
He said the church can easily reach remote areas to sensitize people on preventive measures against the virus.
“This taskforce is complementary. You know it is always good to have a national taskforce, but at the grassroots level I don’t think the high level taskforce can reach the villages. The church has a better structure to reach the people down in the villages," he explained.
Archbishop Ameyu said the taskforce is not only giving awareness to the Catholic community, but it will also help every citizen in the country.
He said that the taskforce will help sick people in hospitals and other institutions to complement the role of the national taskforce.
The South Sudan Council of Churches has formed a taskforce to make the citizens aware of the deadly virus.
Meanwhile the government of South Sudan’s High Level taskforce has approved the purchase of five refrigerators to improve storage of samples collected for Coronavirus testing in the public health laboratories.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, the high level taskforce said that it has directed the Ministry of Environment to disinfect markets, public and private transport. It has also promised to collect samples from the five zones of Juba.
The public health laboratory released 282 test results on Sunday where 36 cases were confirmed positive, 28 of them are South Sudanese who were granted approval to travel from Juba to States.
The taskforce adds that 2 Ugandans, a Kenyan and a Congolese who were sported through Nimule road also tested positive.
The high level taskforce committee is under the Chairmanship of the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
