The Chairman of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), Rt. Rev. Charles Kasonde has sent a message of solidarity with Kenya and Tanzania following news about flash floods which have affected some areas in the two countries.

Media reports during the past week showed that heavy rainfall and flooding have disrupted the livelihood of the people in some parts of Kenya and Tanzania.

Recent media reports thousands of people have been displaced since March in parts of the western and central Kenya following mass landslides, causing human fatality, killing livestock, damaging and destroying houses and other infrastructure such as roads.

In Tanzania, the local media reports show that heavy rainfall experienced in the northern and eastern parts of the country have caused damaging floods resulting into fatalities and displacement of thousands of people as their homes and property have been destroyed.

In two separate statements issued April 30, 2020, Bishop Kasonde has emphasized that the entire AMECEA family is with the two Conferences as the flash floods continue to cause loss of lives and property and affecting the livelihood of the survivors.

“These disasters are happening when you are already busy with the Coronavirus pandemic, and I can only imagine the pressure that they are putting on you and the entire Bishops’ Conference,” he said addressing the President of Kenya Episcopal Conference Most Rev. Philip Anyolo.

“You are not left alone in these difficult times. The entire AMECEA family is with you. We are praying for you and your people so that you may remain strong in your faith and that people of good will and donor partners may come in to make the Cross you are carrying lighter,” said Bishop Kasonde addressing the President of Tanzania Episcopal Conference Most Rev. Gervas Nyaisonga.

“May the Almighty God bless your pastoral and social interventional,” added the AMECEA chairman who is the Ordinary for Solwezi Dioceses in Zambia.
