The Chairperson of the Catholic Parliamentary Chaplaincy of Uganda Honorable Lucy Akello has urged all Ugandans to use the Lenten period as opportunity to extend support to the vulnerable population in the Country.
Speaking in an exclusive interview before the celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Catholic Parliamentary Chaplaincy on Ash Wednesday evening, Lucy Akello said, the beginning of the Lenten season is a moment that should be used by Christians to offer their support to the poor in order to help them pray better.
She said vulnerable like the elderly persons and people with visual impairment are always neglected without any support from the communities within the neighborhood. Lenten observance should be a springboard that edifies the hearts of the able persons to support the poor.
Honorable Lucy Akello who doubles as the Amuru district Woman Member of Parliament disclosed that, as Catholic Parliamentarians, they intend to extend support to children in the orphanages and to victims of nodding disease in Northern Uganda just as they have been doing before.
In her submission, the woman Member of Parliament pledged to continue lobbying for support from her colleagues the law makers and staff of Parliament so as to be sent to the poor.
Apart from alms giving, the legislator further appealed to members of Parliament to use the Lenten period to remain in intensive prayers and true reflection for their spiritual benefits.
As the country prepares for the forth coming general elections in 2021, Hon. Lucy Akello asked Ugandans also to pray for peace and reconciliation in the country in a move to create a peaceful environment where the citizens can live amicably despite numerous signs of threats anticipated.
While drawing her reflection from the Lenten message of the Holy Father Pope Francis, she reiterated the call for everyone to embrace conversion and reconciliation to one another and to God as the basis of faith, expressing the urgency for all to work for unity this auspicious season by means of dialogue a return to God.
Out of 325 members of Parliament of Uganda, currently there are 150 fully registered Catholic members of Parliament in the 10th Parliament of Uganda.
