The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) in the Archdiocese of Blantyre has trained one hundred and twenty agricultural animators from Thyolo district on how they can take care of their harvest.

During the training that was held at Nantipwiri Pastoral centre from Monday to Tuesday, CCJP disclosed a need to have good care of the harvest as the country projects bumper harvest this farming season.

Archdiocesan CCJP Secretary in the Archdiocese of Blantyre Joseph Kampango said the Commission looks forward to have food secure citizens in six Traditional Authority (TA) areas in Thyolo where the project is being implemented.

“Through this project that we are implementing here in Thyolo district, we want to help farmers to fight hunger and we are looking at a number of factors among them being, how they can take care of their harvest,” said Kampango.

“Sometimes we have normal rainfall and we project to have good harvest as a country. But if farmers are not trained on how they can take care of the harvest, we end up becoming food insecure,” added Kampango.

Kampango further added that the farmers have also been drilled on how they can make manure and help in restoring soil fertility.

Concurring with Kampango, Agriculture Extension Development Coordinator (AEDC) from Dwale EPA, Esinta Chasowa applauded the training saying farmers do not know how take care of their harvest.

“Most farmers waste their harvest right from their fields, when they are harvesting, when they are processing the harvest for storage: how they can protect that harvest after processing becomes a problem also,” said Chasowa.

One of the farmers who attended the training, Joyce Gatoma said the training has been an eye opener to the farmers in the district in fighting hunger through good care of the harvest.

The training has also witnessed farmers from Bvumbwe, Chimaliro, Nasenta, Ngongoliwa, Kapichi and Chilamwera TA’s being trained on land rights.

CCJP looks forward to reach many farmers from Thyolo district through participants who have attended the training last week.
