MALAWI: Bishops Commend 18th AMECEA Plenary Preparatory Committee

The Catholic Bishops of Malawi have Commended 18th AMECEA Plenary Preparatory Committee and  expressed their gratitude to all the committee members and all the Catholics and people of good will, for the support they have rendered so far, as part of the preparation for the 18th AMECEA Plenary Assembly to be held in Malawi from 16 -26 July 2014.

This was said during the their second plenary for the year 2014, that was held from 2-6 June at the Secretariat in Lilongwe, where they received reports from all the AMECEA Plenary preparatory sub-committees that were put in place which include liturgy, publicity, fundraising, accommodation, protocol, security, transport and entertainment.

During the same meeting, the bishops urged the committee to become more action oriented as the days have now been numbered.

Commenting on the fundraising strategies, the Chairperson of the Fundraising strategies and Finance sub-committee Dr Mary Shawa said that despite of the fact that they still have to collect more funds from the dioceses, they are confident that they will the target intended. She commended the Bishops for entrusting the laity with the task of raising the funds for the plenary.

Dr Shawa also commended all the Catholics that have generously contributed by making individual donations to the committee in support of the Catholic Church in Malawi at this time of need.

The Chairperson of the Security sub-committee Mr John Chome reported that  their subcommittee has already conducted a survey around all the premises that will accommodate the guests and that security volunteers  will be working in partnership with the police. The subcommittee will be charged with ensuring safety and security of all delegates and their properties.

Meanwhile, The Secretary General of Episcopal Conference of Malawi Rev. Fr. George Buleya on Monday 9th had a meeting with the AMECEA Secretariat Management Team in Nairobi to discuss the finalization of the preparations for the 18thAMECEA Plenary Assembly.

According to the AMECEA Secretary General Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, the meeting focused on reviewing the program of the plenary and deliberating on the final touches of the plenary preparations.

Fr. Lugonzo said that he was grateful that all the necessary preparations were going on well. “The travel arrangements are being made, accommodation and conference facilities have been taken care of as well as Presentations and documentations,” he said.

The 18th AMECEA Plenary Assembly that will take place at Bingu International Conference Centre, BICC, in the country’s Capital City – Lilongwe. Delegates are expected to start arriving through Kamuzu International Airport from Monday, on 14th July, while a colorful opening mass animated by joint choirs from all over the country, which will be open to all the faithful from all over Malawi, shall be held at CIVO Stadium on Thursday morning, 17th July.
