The Bishop of Lira Diocese Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok has urged Christians to be charitable to the poor vulnerable people, especially during Christmas festivities.

Speaking in an interview from his residence recently, the Bishop said in most cases poor people are always left without support from the community noting that it is proper for Christians to emulate Christ who came to comfort the poor and the vulnerable population.

Due to the growing number of elderly, persons with disabilities, and the poor, the Bishop asked the Christians to plan wisely and avoid extravagant spending during this festive season and keep other resources for the poor.

In his message, the Bishop appealed to all Christians to recognise their weaknesses, urging them to remain united and to refrain from bad politics and the culture and uncontrolled aggression.

While presiding over the Eucharistic celebration at Uganda Martyrs Cathedral Ordination ground on Christmas day, the Bishop further warned against excessive consumption of alcohol saying is becoming a big burden to the society.

Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok, said according to his letter to the Galatians (5:21) Saint Paul warns repeatedly against drunkenness, adding that they shall not inherit the kingdom of God. He asked the congregation to consider the face of a drunkard, which resembles that of the devil.

The prelate who did not condemn consumption of alcohol said alcohol is in itself poisoning the body and that every family member should use their resources to plan for development of their families instead of spending in careless consumption of the substance.

After the Eucharistic celebration, Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok was joined by his predecessor Bishop Emeritus Joseph Franzelli and attended the annual get-together Christmas Lunch party with over 1,500 elderly persons an event organised by Sant Egidio community of Lira Diocese at Apostolic Social Centre.

The two Bishops took their time to serve food to the elders, a scenario that surprised the over 1,500 elderly Sant' Egidio Community had invited for Christmas Lunch.
