Secretary General, AMECEA
AMECEA Secretariat is commending the people of Malawi for conducting a Peaceful General election that made His Excellency Peter Mutharika and Saulos Chilima to be New President and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi respectively.

Speaking to AMECEA Online News, the AMECEA Secretary General Rev Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo said AMECEA Secretariat assures its prayers to these new leaders so that God’s Graces accompany them so that Malawi becomes a leading example for Peace, Prosperity and Unity for the benefit of the people of Malawi.

President Mutharika who was declared the winner of the May 20 election last week said his administration would target annual economic growth of 7% and promised a lean cabinet of 20, including deputy ministers – half the size of previous governments.

The new vice president, Saulos Chilima, is an economist and former Managing Director of telecommunications firm Airtel, a local unit of Bharti Airtel.

The poll, which was plagued by logistical problems and followed by sporadic protests, was declared generally “free, peaceful and credible” by a Southern African Development Community observer mission.

Rev. Fr. Jude Waweru,

Commenting on the election the AMECEA Justice and Peace Coordinator Fr. Jude Waweru who was among the members of Malawi election monitoring team said that the general experience in Africa regarding general elections has been that of fear and violence especially during or after the election. “Thank God, for Malawi this did not happen; the election processes went on peacefully despite of the few hitches that rocked the process,” he said.

He said that with the new leadership in place, the people of Malawi should work together with the new government for the growth and development of their country.“As we pray for the people of Malawi that the happiness that is still glowing in their hearts may be sustained through good governance based on the good political will,” he said.
