MALAWI: Bishops Discuss about 18thAMECEA Plenary Preparations

AMECEA Plenary preparations progress is one of the major agenda during the Second Annual Plenary Meeting of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, (ECM) that began on 2ndJune and ended on 6thJune 2014 at the Catholic secretariat in Lilongwe, Malawi.

This is the third time the conference is hosting the AMECEA Plenary Assembly. The first time was in 1979 when it hosted the 7th Plenary Assembly in Zomba, Malawi with the theme: “The Implementation of the AMECEA Bishops Pastoral Priority of Building Small Christian Communities: An Evaluation”; The second time was in 1995 when it hosted the 12th Plenary Assembly in Mangochi, Malawi with the theme: “The Role of the Church in Development in the Light of the African Synod.”

According to the Press Release issued on 2nd June 2014 and signed by the Secretary General of ECM, Fr George Buleya stated that other issues discussed were the preparation of the Bishops for their impending Ad-Liminavisit to the Holy Father, which is scheduled to take place between 6thand 9th November, 2014; the Catholic University of Malawi, formation of clergy in Malawi, the constitution of the Catholic Charismatic movement, the current social and political environment after the tripartite election.

In addition, the plenary was to receive a progress report about the Chichewa Missal and the new local language translation of Mass and the progress and status reports from the commissions and departments at the Catholic Secretariat.

Malawi conference is preparing to host 18th AMECEA Plenary which is scheduled to take place from 16th– 26th July 2014 in Lilongwe.
