CUEA Witnesses Transition of Leadership as New Vice Chancellor is Installed

office as new Vice Chancellor of CUEA

The journey that began on 23rd July 2018 at the end of the 19thAMECEA Plenary Assembly in Addis Ababa Ethiopia when the AMECEA Bishops appointed Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua as the new Vice Chancellor of Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) climaxed on October 18, 2018 when he was officially installed as the head of the institution.

In a ceremony that was led by the University Chancellor Rt. Rev. Charles Kasonde, the University Council Chairman Rt. Rev. Maurice Muhatia Makumba, the University Council Members, CUEA staff members, students, parents and invited guest, Prof. Mbugua became the 8th Vice Chancellor of CUEA and the 7thrector of the same institution.

The ceremony began with the outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Justus Mbae giving his handing over speech, which was followed by Prof Mbugua being presented to the Chancellor by the Chairman of the University Council for the installation.

Bishop Muhatia explained that the appointment of Rev. Prof. Mbugua was in accordance with the procedures stipulated in Article 19 (1) of the University Chatter for the Appointment of a Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

Kneeling down with his hand placed on the Holy Bible, Prof. Mbugua recited the Creed and declared his acceptance to everything definitively proposed by the Church regarding the teaching on faith and morals. At the same time, he promised to adhere to the religious submission of will and intellect to the teachings which either the Roman Pontiff or the College of Bishops directs when they exercise authentic magisterium.

Having taken the oath of office, Prof. Mbugua was assisted to vest in academic gowns by the outgoing Vice Chancellor together with the Dean of the Faculty of Theology Rev. Dr Frederick Wanjala, as well as the Chairman of the University Council.

He then officially received the letter of appointment as Vice Chancellor of CUEA from the Chancellor, Bishop Kasonde. Prof. Mbugua was then presented with the University symbols and instruments of authority which included University seal, University Chatter, the maze, University Flag and the Catholic Identity document.

Prof. Mbugua promised to work diligently to promote the vision and mission of CUEA as well as to live to the dream of CUEA’s founding fathers.

He thanked the outgoing Vice Chancellor Prof. Mbae for “his dedication and loyalty to the Church especially for accepting to take up the Vice Chancellor’s office at a time when CUEA was in its darkest moment.” He added that “the Council and its secretary, Prof. Mbae managed to rally the University into devising a strategy to turn the University around, which is currently being implemented under the guidance and leadership of the University Management and the CUEA family.”

The Rectors/Vice Chancellors of CHIEA/CUEA have been as follows Fr. Paul KALANDA (Rector, 1980), who was made Bishop of Moroto Diocese Uganda in 1980; Very. Rev. Monsignor Augustine NDEUKOYA             (Rector, 1980-1993); Very. Rev. Monsignor Deogratias MBIKU (Rector/Vice Chancellor 1993-1996); Rev. Dr. Caesar LUKUDU (Rector/Vice Chancellor, 1996-2002); Rev. Prof. John MAVIRI (Rector/Vice Chancellor, 2002-2011); Very Rev. Monsignor Dr. Pius Rutechura (Rector/Vice Chancellor, 2011-2016); Prof. Justus Gitari Mbae (Ag. Vice Chancellor. 2016-2018); and Rev. Prof. Stephen Mbugua Ngari (the current Rector/Vice Chancellor).
