KENYA: The Late Bishop Cornelius Korir to be accorded a State Funeral due to Peace initiatives in the Country

The Late Bishop of Elderet Rt. Rev. Cornelius Korir will be laid to rest on 11th, November, 2017, inside the Sacred Heart Cathedral, in accordance with Catholic traditions.

 A state funeral will be conducted at the Eldoret Sports Club where all the Bishops, the clergy, religious brothers and sisters, the faithful, government officials and other religious leaders are expected to pay their last respects.

Kenyan President His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto among other dignitaries are also expected to attend the state burial of Bishop Korir.

In an interview with Waumini Online News the Vice Chairman of The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishop (KCCB) – Catholic and Justice Commission (CJPC) and the archbishop os Mombasa Most Rev. Martin Kivuva said Bishop Korir’s work has been recognized by the county of Eldoret, hence the county is going to accord him a state burial.

 Archbishop Kivuva said that, the late Bishop Korir who was honored as a peace ambassador will be given a decent and honorable send off, which he termed as a standing ovation by the government and by the church due to his humility and positive approach to people and Issus.

His body left the Moi Referral Hospital to the Cathedral at around 10am, followed by four hours of public viewing. Then there will be a night vigil on the eve of the burial on Saturday.

According to Communications Director Rev. Fr. Fredrick Njoroge, on Saturday, 11th, November, 2017, the casket will be escorted in a procession for two kilometres from the Cathedral through Eldoret town to the Eldoret Sports Club along the Kisumu road where a funeral service will take place.

Bishop Korir will be buried in the tomb which is 2.9 meters long and 1.225 meters high located at the Grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a small room behind the altar. The tomb is similar to a cabin with two opening doors. His body will be clothed in the vestments he loved most.

At the same time, inscriptions of his personal details, including his date of ordination and the date of his death, have been written on an adjacent slab. “Mkitendee kazi chakula kidumucho” (Work for food that endures) reads the inscription on the slab.


He died on the night of 29th, October, 2017 at the age of 67. May His Soul Rest in Peace.
