MALAWI: New Archbishop for Blantyre Archdiocese Installed

Thousands of Catholic faithful from all the dioceses in Malawi gathered at Limbe Cathedral of Archdiocese of Blantyre to celebrate and witness the installation of Most Rev Thomas Luke Msusa, the new Archbishop of Blantyre Archdiocese.

The event which took place on February 8th 2014 was also attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia, Most Archbishop Julio Murat, Malawi’s President Joyce Banda and a host of cabinet ministers as Archbishop of Blantyre makes him the fourth Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Blantyre.

Speaking during the function, the outgoing Diocesan administrator, now Bishop elect for the Diocese of Mangochi, Rt. Rev. Montfort Stima, congratulated the New Archbishop for being appointed to serve Lord in the Archdiocese. “Am happy today that I am now leaving the Archdiocese of Blantyre in safe hands; Continue being a good Shepherd” he said.

According to Bishop Stima, Blantyre Archdiocese has a total number of Christians amounting to over one million and the Archdiocese covers five districts, with 40 parishes and 74 priests.

Archbishop Msusa was formerly the Bishop of Diocese of Zomba in the Eastern part of Malawi.

Earlier last year, the Holy Father Pope Francis transferred Archbishop Tarcisius Ziyaye from the Archdiocese of Blantyre to the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, following the retirement of Archbishop Remi Ste-Marie.
