AMECEA: CUEA Student leads 'Cancer Awareness Program Activity' to the University

Emily Sagini, a second year student in MBA Strategic Management at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) from the Pink Concepts Kenya led a one-week event that took place between 7th and 11th November, 2016 at university’s Main Campus in Langata, Nairobi. The event comprised of medics in bid to teach and offer services on cancer awareness in the institution.

Activities included cancer screening, other health check-ups such as blood glucose, blood pressure, BMI and malaria. There was also a cancer awareness walk from the CUEA Main Campus to Hardy Shopping Centre and back.

It also offered talks on: lifestyle diseases, the most common cancers in Kenya, emerging cancers in Kenya, diet and exercise, advancements made in cancer treatment, the right to healthcare and advocacy for cancer patients and psychosocial support for cancer patients

Sessions by various speakers throughout the week were interactive experiences that we hoped would produce valuable, actionable outcomes.

The event was organized in collaboration with the Medanta Africare Hospital Nyumbani Diagnostic Laboratory, The Karen Hospital and CUEA’s very own Business Incubation Centre, The Faculty of Law, The Department of Counselling and Psychology, the Regina Pacis Institute of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Business.

Over 500 people were screened.

Meanwhile Billy Scott Irakose, a first year Bachelor of Commerce student at CUEA, was one of the participants of the Rio 2016 Olympics that took place few months ago. He is a swimming athlete in the 50 and 100 meters free style category and also does the breast stroke.

In the Rio competition, he managed to record 26.36 seconds in the 50 meters freestyle. In the world ranking; he is position 66 out of a massive number of competitors worldwide.

Billy has competed in the world swimming championships in Doha, Qatar 2014, Kazan in 2015 and in Russia where he qualified for the Olympics games in Rio 2016.

Among other competitions, he has participated for his country include: Turkey Istanbul in December 2012, Spain in the year 2013 for the world championship competition, April 2014 a confederation Africaine de Nation Amateur (CANA) Zone III and IV completion in Uganda where he set the new Burundi national record of 26.19 seconds in 50 meters free style and 59.56 seconds in 100 meters free style.

Apart from swimming, he also plays Basket Ball for the Catholic university of Eastern Africa.
